Recently, I’ve been fascinated by what I define as “childhood weirdness,” the memories that either get excused because of age or straight-up repression. For example, I had an English tutor help me with speech pronunciation in the 3rd grade who also happened to be an “End of the World” evangelical doomsday prepper who made me copy chapters of the Book of Revelations for homework. In correspondence, I created a lot of apocalypse-themed paintings in elementary school though never truly processed that until now. Similarly, I had an absolute obsession with the tooth fairy and constructed an elaborate religious logic dedicated to this being. So in the theme of investigating my “childhood weirdness,” I decided to create a video “petitioning” the tooth fairy.

With discussions surrounding rituality, there is a heavy discussion on the conspiracies of selves as vehicular movements towards accomplishing a task. So much of ritual is about the psychodrama - how to convince the self to momentarily suspend belief and withdraw from a reality that is seated in singular logic. For this piece, I drew heavy inspiration from this theory of rituality and tried to accomplish this by mimicking rhythms found in hypnosis tracks and adding in repeating visual motifs throughout my video. Themes of religious prayer, devotion, and piety are used to appease this “psychodrama” so much of ritual entails.
